Guide
How to measure your room in ten minutes.
You don't need to be an expert. With these measurements you can start designing, and adjust them later.
View from above: note every wall, window, door and pipe.
Measure each wall at three heights and use the shortest.
- 1
Get what you need
A tape measure, paper and pencil (or your phone). If you can, ask someone to hold the tape.
- 2
Sketch the room from above
A simple rectangle with each wall. It doesn't need to look good — just so you know which wall is which.
- 3
Measure each wall end to end
Corner to corner, in centimetres. Write each measurement on its wall in the sketch.
- 4
Measure the height
Floor to ceiling, at two or three points. Ceilings are not always level.
- 5
Place windows and doors
Note their width, height and distance from the corner and the floor.
- 6
Mark what can't move
Sockets, pipes, gas, columns, and where the hob, fridge and sink go.
Tips that save mistakes
- Measure everything in centimetres, without rounding.
- Measure each wall twice: if it doesn't match, measure again.
- If you're replacing appliances, note the new ones' sizes.
- Take photos of each wall — they help a lot if you ask the team for help.
